Configuring WebIntelligence Default Settings

by: Troy Gottfired, Senior BI Consultant, CRCP, BECP

Let’s face it:  most of us do not design reports to be printed on A4 paper.  You would never guess that by the default settings in WebIntelligence.  Many a WebI user spends countless minutes (add that up to hours and even days in the lifespan of a project) reformatting basic properties of a WebI document to meet formatting standards.  Many of these settings can be configured by an Enterprise Administrator in order to save time and help promote the use of the formatting standards.

WebIntelligence, as the name implies, is a web-based ad-hoc query tool in Business Objects Enterprise.  As such, any modifications to default settings needs to be done in a central location; namely, the Enterprise server or servers.  Depending on whether a Java Web Application Server (e.g. Tomcat) or the .NET environment (i.e. IIS) is being used, the appropriate file to configure is found in a different location.  Please note that the locations given in this article pertain to Enterprise XIR2 SP2.  Other versions may differ slightly in the location of these files.

For Tomcat, the file to be edited is:

[Default Installation Drive]\Program Files\Business Objects\Tomcat\webapps\businessobjects\enterprise115\desktoplaunch\webiApplet\AppletConfig\defaultConfig.xml

For IIS, the file to be edited is:

[Default Installation Drive]\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 11.5\Web Content\Enterprise115\webiApplet\AppletConfig\defaultConfig.xml

Configurable Options:

  • Page Size and Orientation
  • Cell Formatting, including Table Headers, Footers, Sections, Cross-tabs, etc… (Font, Borders, Alignment, Skin, Alternate Row Color)
  • Graphing Options, including Wall Appearance, Borders, 3D, Palette, XYZ Axis, XYZ Grid, and XYZ Labels
  • Default Skins

Custom Skins are saved in the following directory, and new keys are added to the appropriate defaultConfig.xml file:

[Default Installation Drive]\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 11.5\Images

WebIntelligence users should develop a set of standards to be applied for formatting for these elements and inform their Enterprise Administrator of the modifications they would like to make.  Additionally, any modification of files provided by Business Objects should occur in a copy of the original file.  Please make sure to backup any files you will modify, as well as your altered files.  Be aware that Service Packs and upgrades may change these files, so be sure to test WebIntelligence formatting defaults after any upgrades or Service Packs are applied.
